New Orleans Picnic Spots That Are Made in the Shade

1. City Park (Under the Oaks or by Big Lake)

City Park is one of NOLA’s top parks, with over 1,300 acres of lush green space, lakes, beautiful oak trees, and so much more. The majestic oaks are draped in Spanish moss, offering generous shade for a picnic lunch.

Other cool spots are near the Besthoff Sculpture Garden or Big Lake. After lunch, rent a swan paddle boat or soak up some AC as you stroll through the New Orleans Museum of Art (NOMA). Don’t feel like packing a lunch? Stop by Café du Monde inside the park to indulge in a frosty iced coffee and irresistible beignets.

2. Riverview Park (“The Fly” Behind Audubon Zoo)

You’ll find Riverview Park, or “The Fly” to locals, tucked behind the popular Audubon Zoo. It’s a great place to watch ships go by on the mighty Mississippi River or toss a Frisbee. Thanks to its proximity to the river, you’ll enjoy a cool breeze, and mature trees provide shaded spots for your picnic spread. To take advantage of cooler temps and some amazing views, go just before sunset.

3. Coliseum Square (Lower Garden District)

Coliseum Square is in a quiet neighborhood in the Lower Garden District, situated on three blocks and featuring open spaces and shaded areas. There are fountains, benches, and trees that provide several places to enjoy a picnic in a peaceful setting. It’s a nice place to check out if you’re looking for something a bit smaller and less crowded.

4. Algiers Point Levee Trail

Take a trip on the ferry and head across the river to Algiers Point. The area isn’t completely shaded, but there are some covered spots under several trees, and fewer tourists, since this park is more off-the-beaten-path. Therefore, you can enjoy a quieter lunch if that’s your thing. Plus, the breeze coming off the water helps create a nice break from the summer heat.

Made in the Shade During a New Orleans Summer

Don’t let the New Orleans heat keep you indoors during your whole visit. These parks offer shady spots that make it easier to enjoy a picnic lunch (or brunch) or an evening snack without overheating. Just make sure to stay hydrated, pack for the summer heat, and limit your time in the sun.

During the hottest parts of the day, plan to spend most of your time indoors and save picnics for the morning or before sunset. Need a break? Take an afternoon snooze in your New Orleans hotel before heading out for round two of your Big Easy explorations.
